Just when you thought Oscars acceptance speeches about gender equality and Emma Watson being a boss were beginning to quell the tide of misogyny, leading men's magazine, Playboy, and leading perve and alleged sexual coercer, Terry Richardson, have collaborated for an entire issue of really boring photographs.
Last year Playboy announced they would release an issue photographed entirely by Terry Richardson, and here it is, because Playboy are pretty good at courting online media attention – good and bad – in order to pique interest and sell magazines. Well, misery accomplished Playboy!
The images are all shot in Richardson's signature, on-camera-flash style, either against a white wall (classic Richardson) or outside (experimental Richardson). Editorials that have been shot in LA and depict women wearing California logo t-shirts, are called imaginative things like California Dreamin'.
Terry Richardson probably shouldn't be getting hired until the myriad sexual coercion accusations run their course (hopefully via the criminal justice system), especially considering the alleged coercion happened while he was working, but what's perhaps more offensive here is just how boring the set of images so far – Richardson has released a sneak preview on his online blog, Terry's Diary – are. Like, Playboy: if you're going to dedicate an entire issue to one photographer or one theme, please have something to say. Naked women sucking ice blocks? Come on.
The issue is out now.
