Yes, magazines A) still exist and B) are still running "most beautiful" and "hottest" lists. As long as paper and celebrities exist magazines will probably continue to roll these lists out on an annual basis, quenching the public's thirst for pitting fabulous people against one another in order to make their readers – us! – feel better.

This time around, however, it could be worse. People magazine have just released their 2015 Most Beautiful People, and have awarded (can a "prize" that has nothing to do with the possession of talent be called an "award"?) Sandra Bullock the number one spot. Sandra Bullock is the oldest person to ever be awarded the top spot in the list's 25 year history, the second oldest being Julia Roberts, who was awarded the spot in 2010, at 42 years old. More surprisingly still, the youngest person to nab People's Most Beautiful Person is actually a man: Leonardo DiCaprio, when he was 23 years old.

Fusion has further unpacked the Most Beautiful People cover stars and discovered that the fair representation of adult men and women is alive and well at People: the average age of the Most Beautiful Person is 32 years old, and the Most Beautiful Person has been increasing in age since 1998, which was also the last year someone under the age of 30 was chosen as the Most Beautiful Person.

Obviously ranking people based only on their physical beauty, and then celebrating the "winner" in the form of a glossy magazine cover is ridiculous, but it's commendable that, in a society – and industry for that matter – that reveres youth, People are choosing actual adult people, and, more specifically, actual adult women for their Most Beautiful People covers. This comes at a time when we're cool with calling 15 year old Lily-Rose Depp a "megababe" and scorning Madonna because how dare someone her age touch a young man. Surprisingly, it's refreshing.
