Attention readers who are into well-made, classic (but cool) fashion product by local, independent designers: LIFEwithBIRD have opened a pop-up store in Albert Coates Lane at Melbourne's QV buliding.
Designer and co-founder Nicholas Van Messner had this to say about the move: "A lot of interesting things are happening at that end of the city, with the opening of Emporium, and the emergence of Rankins Lane; to be in the middle of that at the QV Building is perfect for LIFEwithBIRD. The city is growing and we felt that a pop up would be a great way to expand on our existing Flinders Lane location and trial the other end of the city. It's also a great opportunity for us to be part of their amazing mix of Australian and international designers."
The QV Building retail initiative sits right near the Emporium in Melbourne, which houses the likes of Dion Lee, Zimmermann and Manning Cartell, and is part of a re-invigoration of physical independent retail stores in Melbourne.
The fact that independent Australian labels are opening flagship stores is probably the result of the downfall of multi-brand boutiques, many of which closed after digital competition – often from the same labels they were stocking – made their business model unfeasible. Because of higher margins, it's much more cost-effective for labels to open their own stores than to supply multi-brand stores with their product.
Speaking of retail, did you know we now have an estore, where we stock product from our favourite independent labels, L.W.B by LIFEwithBIRD being one of them? They've just launched their winter 2015 collection, and here are our favourite pieces from the range (you can shop it all over here, too).
