Mala Brajkovic is the cult New Zealand designer who recently co-founded Bad Things Apparel with her partner, Vinnie Woolston – who also happens to be the new face of YSL's la Nuit de L'homme fragrance – and the pair have just released the first photo and video campaign for the brand.
I caught up with Mala Brajkovic a few months ago, just as Bad Things Apparel was launching, and we discussed how, after the experience – and pressure! – of running her eponymous label and store (it was one of New Zealand's most revered fashion labels while it lasted), she wanted to create a business that would fit into her lifestyle; one of living in New Zealand's unofficial surf capital, Raglan, and of having young children.
Under Bad Things Apparel, Mala and Vinnie produce t-shirts, jumpers and accessories that unite their passions for skate culture, street wear, art and music under one label.
Mala and Vinnie recruit and work with creatives from these communities wherever they can, and have done just that for their new t-shirt designs and new campaign and campaign video.
The collection features designs by artists including Australian metal and gore artist Glenno Smith, Australian street artist Alexjustspat one half of UK art duo Skumbag-Nik Gernet and Californian skate graphic artist Jimbo Phillips, the son of iconic '70s Santa Cruz Skate graphic artist Jim Phillips.
Longtime collaborators Karen Inderbitzen-Waller and Delphine Avril Planqueel photographed the campaign (and Delphine, who is also a model, stars in it, too), which features portraits of Vinnie Woolston, Mala and Vinnie's daughter, Mickey, among many familiar faces from the New Zealand creative community.
