TMZ, who previously reported that the pearl-covered dress, worn by Lupita Nyong'o to this year's Academy Awards, had been stolen, is now reporting that said dress has been returned. Also, it's apparently a big ol' fashioned fake.
According to TMZ, a man called them at 2.30pm on Friday to tell them he had taken the dress from her hotel room, taken two pearls from the dress to the garment district in LA, where he was told they were fake. He then told TMZ he decided to return the dress to the hotel in a garment bag, and that it was in the second floor bathroom adjacent to the fitness centre. TMZ confirmed with the LA County Sheriff's Department that the dress had been returned.
So guys, it's totally cool: this beautiful piece of craftsmanship is not lost for eternity, and you can now go about your weekend without that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach.
Next question: is the dress actually covered in 6,000 real Akoya cultured pearls, as Calvin Klein stated, making it worth over $150, 000USD, or is it just covered in little shiny plastic balls?
