Mateja Buila and Chloe Nour don't know this, but I've known them for a long time now. I have known them as @Fuckingnowheretown and @Mrsjudgeheadjones, their respective Instagram accounts. I follow Mateja's exploits as a model and exceptionally-dressed human being, and Chloe's exploits as photographer and Cool Girl, as well as their adventures together, long before I knew their real names or had email conversations with them. Which sounds terrifying, but is what everyone does (right?) so I don't feel bad about this at all.
All of which is to say that when I found out that our recent shoot, Gl0$y was a production by the creative platform, In Your Dreams, that the duo have launched, I naturally wanted to know as much as I possibly could about it. So here we are: introducing the IRL Mateja Buila, Chloe Nour and their new BFF collaborative project, In Your Dreams.
You formed In Your Dreams with your BFF Mateja. What are your backgrounds?
Mateja and I have been besties since high school, and have been creating and collaborating together since forever. We both went to Sydney College of the Arts, and have always been involved in each others work. We share a unique understanding of each others' visual aesthetics and have always had the most fun bringing that vision to life together.
When and why did you decide to start In Your Dreams?
In Your Dreams is a space for us to share the projects we work on together, work with creatives we admire, brag about stuff we love and share content we're excited about. In all honesty creating an online platform was a solution to our creative laziness, to keep us accountable and inspired.
If you were to describe In Your Dreams in one sentence or a phrase, what would you say?
Who or what are you inspired by?
Mateja is inspired by high fashion, films, anime, Japanese culture and style icons Chloe Sevigny and Kiko Mizuhara.
I'm inspired by the everyday, wearable art, colour, chaos, the women in my world and spoken poetry. We are inspired by each other and share an interest in the weird, the grimy and the dreamy.
What's important about the collaboration process to you two?
We're honest about what we love and we've never had to compromise because we love each others' ideas. We collaborate together because its fun and two heads are better than one.
What are some of the ultimate goals with In Your Dreams? Where do you want to take it?
In Your Dreams is in its early stages, so at this point we just want to focus on creating interesting content, having fun and not taking ourselves too seriously. Ultimately we're creating a club; a common place for creatives we love.
It seems like there's a few little collectives like this popping up around the place. Why do you think this is?
There is a plethora of online publishers, but so often when creating we've had to conform our ideas to fit into a certain aesthetic that would suit a particular magazine's or publisher's needs. This can sway our work in a certain direction that isn't always true to our vision.
Mateja and I agree that this trend of collectives is a solution to this competitive and intimidating environment; it's become necessary to create spaces for ourselves to do what we want to do and not give a fuck about what other people think.
Are there any other creative collectives out there you admire?
We love Feel The Future, You and Me 4EVA, Petra Collins and Tavi Gevinson, Harmony Korine and Chloe Sevigny, and Ninja and Yolandi.
What are you listening to, reading and watching right now?
We're obsessing over Chloë Sevigny's photo book, Haruki Murakami, 90s
hits and Netflix.
