Every morning Elfy and I undertake the very important task of compiling all the celebrity news that we think you absolutely need to know. This morning my face lit up like it has never lit up before, and I immediately txt my fashion director, Elle Packham, with the news that today is The Day: it's Leonardo DiCaprio's 40th birthday! Then, like a slick, military-style operation, she replied: "Leo's birthday? It's go time".
It's hard to pinpoint exactly what it is about Leonardo DiCaprio that makes him so desperately important to the lives of our generation, but I have thought about it quite a lot (a lot, a lot), so here goes:
Obviously he is a babe (babe babe babe). But, moreover, he has always been the exact kind of babe that society, and therefore we, have demanded at any given time. Think about his film roles and our development as two parallel lines: when we were young he played bad-ass, romantic, artistic types like Jim Carroll in the Basketball Diaries, Richard in The Beach or, you know, ROMEO. Then, as we demand more from our male leads, and life and men in general, he starts to take on roles with responsibility, with leadership, with issues: Howard Hughes in The Aviator, Billy in The Departed, Danny Archer in Blood Diamond. Finally, as we start to become real adults trying to live real lives that include real relationship, D-Caps does exactly the same: Frank Wheeler in Revolutionary Road, anybody? No, The Wolf of Wall Street doesn't fit into this argument at all, but he had all of the awesome dance moves in it, so I'm prepared to look past it. Also, in real life, he's into environmentalism and politics now, so he's basically The Perfect Man both on-screen and off.
Happy 40th birthday Leonardo DiCaprio! Here are our fashion director, Elle Packham's, favourite D-Caps moments (there are so many incredible ones wow). Like Celene Dion's lyrics in that song from Titanic (paraphrased slightly): 'our hearts will go on loving you'.
