We've spent some time musing on the return of '70s style over the next few seasons, and, if one winter 2015-16 (northern hemisphere) collection is to confirm our prediction, it's most certainly Karen Walker's.
Walker presented her winter 2015-16 collection at New York Fashion Week earlier today. Called Time Machine, the collection is inspired by '70s-era Joanna Lumley, as the press release explains: "Joanna Lumley in 70s sci-fi detective time-travel series Sapphire and Steel is the jumping-off point for the season. A young Karen Walker watched in awe, as Sapphire guarded the order and integrity of time, all the while being a beacon of chic. The message was placed. Functional and strong does not exclude glam."
The custom print for the collection is of a warped clock, and Walker certainly pays homage to other time periods here via Victorian collars and WWII-era, utilitarian jackets. It's the hybrid pieces – floral dresses (part New Age '70s, part Jane Austen novel), and the cobalt blue leather jacket (which combines wartime functionality with '70s frivolity - colour!) – that are the centre pieces here.
