Before I moved to Australia I was under the assumption that Flamin' Galah–which I of course learned by religiously watching the fine program that is Home & Away–was a much more common, colloquially-employed phrase than it is. Noone ever uses it IRL which is disappointing for someone who expected to move over here and be able to rip everyone out about it. :(
Well thank you Emma Mulholland! She's just released the lookbook for her winter 2015 collection and, called 'Cry Birdy', there's one particularly spectacular tote bag that has said iconic phrase embroided across it, complete with, yes, a flaming galah.
The collection is inspired by Australia's kitschy adoption of its indigenous wildlife for tourist memorabilia and John Waters' Cry Baby, which makes for a pastel rockabilly world in which tough kids wear pink leather jackets complete with flourishes of eucalyptus leaves. Now that's a subculture I can get behind.
